Abstract:
Excavations on the south side of The Green revealed evidence of timber-framed buildings dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries AD. The presence of twelfth-century pottery suggested earlier settlement on the site. The large assemblage of pottery was dominated by kitchen wares and the range of sources supported the suggested presence of a medieval market on The Green. From the fifteenth century the area was occupied by gardens, until the nineteenth century when a cellared building was constructed. Includes specialist reports on:
