Abstract:

Compiled from fieldwork notes by the late Keith Scott. Three trenches excavated from 1993-1994 are described. These provide evidence of first- to early fourth-century activity. The earliest features were a first-century ditch and well which are taken to suggest an initial ribbon development to the north of Watling Street that was followed in the second to third century by an expansion of activity represented by a building and road or working area that had been maintained from the second to early fourth centuries. The sequence of Roman activity to the north of Watling street at Manduessedum is, therefore, considered to be consistent with that seen in the more extensive investigations that have take place to the south.
