Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An assessment of the circumstances of recovery, and nature of items recovered, in the Snettisham hoards provides the context for an exploration of Treasure Trove. The composition of artefacts accepted as `gold' and `silver' -- in recent judgements those containing over 50o/o of each metal respectively -- non-precious objects found in direct association, and problems with ascertaining whether the whole deposit was hidden with an intention to recover, are all at issue. Redefining of the object of Treasure Trove law as being primarily to preserve and protect antiquities for the nation would, it is thought, both avoid future loss to private ownership/trade and simplify what has become a complex statute to apply. | |
