Abstract:
The work has provided an important stimulus to 7th-12th century Orkney studies, especially for the pre-Norse and Norse buildings. The Brough is not yet proved as monastic, though was a site of local political or ecclesiastical importance. New discoveries are the beehive structures, with construction trenches and palisading: ?Christian. The intensive and dominating Norse occupation is not yet relatable to other cultures and differs from other Norse colonies: later 9th century? One substantial and five smaller dwellings suggest Germanic influence. By late 10th/early 11th the site is a shanty town scarcely fitting the 'Golden Age' of the Earldom.
