[NF 73]. The excavation of a wheelhouse complex on the sandy coastal plain revealed a site which had been occupied, probably intermittently, over a long period. The original aisled wheelhouse, with an unusual semi-circular kerb of red deer jawbones round a central hearth, opened off a revetted forecourt which was later replaced by a long sunken passage with side-cell, probably because of shifting sand. Outer revetments were added later to retain the sand. A furnace of uncertain function belonged to the early forecourt phase, and a smaller, probably secondary, wheelhouse opened off one side of the main building. The site yielded much pottery of Hebridean wheelhouse type, together with a coarser and later ware, an iron ploughshare and quernstones, but the bone and antler equipment was poor for this type of site.
