Develops ideas put forward in 1966 which suggested that the territory of the Novantae was cordoned off rather than being occupied. It is also suggested that the Romans made routine use of native irregular levies, operating as tribal units with their own officers and weaponry (swords of Piggott Group IV?). More elaborate carpentry in crannogs, as well as exchange of trade goods, indicates the progress of Romanization until the Trajanic withdrawal from Scotland. | |||
