Abstract:
Records 17 separate prehistoric burial sites. First, a significant grave group found in 1919 at Bell Hillock, East Kinwhirrie, Kirremuir, including a Food Vessel and a spacer-plate necklace and bracelet of Whitby jet, described by Alison Sheridan (34--6) in `Jet spacer plate necklace and bracelet'. Secondly, eleven cists and one urn burial investigated during the 1950s; besides a small range of human skeletal remains, the finds included several Food Vessels. Thirdly, four Bronze Age cists with radiocarbon dates excavated between 1986 and 1994 at: Mains of Melgund (with contributions on `The skeletal material' by Margaret Bruce (51--2), `The Food Vessel' by Ann MacSween (52), and `The Food Vessel residue' by Brian Moffat (52--4)); East Campsie (with `The skeletal remains' by Margaret Bruce (54) and `The flint knife' by Ann Clarke (54--5)); Mains of Balgavies (including `The skeletal material' by Margaret Bruce (56--7)); and West Scryne (`The skeletal remains' by Margaret Bruce (58) and `The flint knives' by Ann Clarke (58-9)). The wider significance of this sizeable sample of prehistoric burials from the region is considered.
