In recent years there has been an effort to better understand archaeological sites and, in turn, the most appropriate design parameters for cover buildings that protect vulnerable features. This article briefly discusses replacement cover buildings recently erected at Brading Roman Villa on the Isle of Wight and Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire, and the diagnostic monitoring of a 13th century tile pavement and its environment within a temporary marquee at Cleeve Abbey, Somerset, to illustrate how an understanding of complex sites through scientific assessment can be successfully applied to architectural design. There are environmental parameters that remain difficult to capture precisely with current technologies, however, and designs for new cover buildings therefore need to be flexible. LD | ||||
