Abstract:
Discusses a category of carpenters' marks that are neither assembly marks nor setting out lines. The theory is put forward that these marks fall into two types: the first originates from the pre-framing stage when a log is hewn into a squared baulk; the other relates to the setting out and levelling of a timber-framed structure at the framing stage.
