Abstract:
Examines structural and documentary evidence for the position of the principal chamber in houses of the richer peasantry between the Norman Conquest and the 17th century. It appears that in several parts of S England the chamber was successively on the ground floor, the first floor, the ground floor again, and finally the upper floor again, although those phases were not simultaneous in different areas.
