Abstract:
Documentary evidence here summarized cannot be directly related to medieval buildings excavated. At 1-5 Aldwark 11th century pits and post-holes represent the earliest post-Roman occupation, followed by a 12th century stone building and well-shaft and later timber-lined wells and a tenement, the area declining by the 17th century. At 2 Aldwark were foundations and subsequent rebuildings of 13th-18th century tenements. Numbers 21-33 provided evidence of 12th/13th century ?hornworking and of the churchyard's SW edge. Minor excavations and watching briefs are also recorded. F B/Ed. With contributions by Sarah Rees Jones, Patrick Ottaway, J.R. Magilton, R.F. Smith, E. King , T. Tolhurst, David Brinklow.
