Abstract:
Photogrammetric survey of the fabric of the W tower of the parish church of St Mary Bishophill Junior allowed the conclusion that the tower was built in third quarter of 11th century, mostly from Roman and later materials. It may have been a 'turriform nave' with small attached chancel. Putlog holes allowed interpretation of scaffolding. Complete internal reorganization in later 15th probably related to bell-frame replacement. North of the tower excavations in the 1960s yielded information about a decaying Roman town house, a spread of late Roman fish remains, and a group of burials (one coin-dated to c AD 905-30). Finally, foundations for an early chancel were seen in St Mary Castlegate, and pre-Conquest worked stones are described. With contributions by P.C. Buckland, T.F.C. Blagg, D. Tweddle, H.K. Kenward, E. Coatsworth and J.A. Durrah
