Abstract:
Excavations within `The Lay Cemetery' (91--7) revealed a sequence of medieval and post-medieval burials, the earliest of which were in cists. The presence of some Roman features and pottery of the first to fourth centuries suggests the area was on the edge of a settlement at that time. `The human bones' (97--135 including Appendices A-D) gives a full analysis of bone survival and palaeopathology. `Appendix E: the Rochester Cathedral Chalice' by Julie Lovett (136--7) describes this pewter vessel recovered from one of the graves, apparently placed in the hands of the deceased whose finger bones were found attached to it.
