Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The estuarine alluvial lands between Berkeley and Aust, reclaimed during the Roman period, were under intensive arable cultivation during medieval times, as shown by the predominance of well preserved, classical ridge and furrow. Approximately 1070ha of grassland remained, of which 620ha survived into modern times. The archaeological evidence hints at an eastward shift of settlement over the medieval period from the alluvial to the bedrock landscape. Enclosure of the alluvial open fields, suggesting a movement to pastoralism, seems to have been largely completed by the seventeenth century. Early modern coastal erosion caused some loss of alluvial land and necessitated at Oldbury-on-Severn and Hill the setting back of sea defences. There is an `Appendix -- air photographs consulted' (97). | |||||||||
