Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Paper reviewing the geological characteristics of the dolomitic conglomerate and Sudbrook sandstone, and aiming to establish the distribution and use of the stones as building materials in the coastal area between the rivers Usk and Wye. The Sudbrook sandstone was used in the main Roman settlements, but not the dolomitic conglomerate. Both were used in medieval and early-modern times, beginning with the Norman conquest, the earliest Norman application of Sudbrook sandstone at Chepstow Castle having included material robbed from Roman buildings.
