Abstract:
Most evidence from the town dates to the medieval and post--medieval periods, including indications of twelfth century clay quarrying, and the realignment of defences to incorporate new suburbs in the thirteenth century. Excavations in the Paradise garden area, near to the castle, revealed post fourteenth century conversion of a previously occupied area to gardens. May indicate a socio--economic change in demographic focus, possibly in favour of the harbour area.
