Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The final article in the series presents an overview of the evidence for the Alfredian burh in the light of the natural topography and the inherited landscape (see also 95/1089, 96/1205, and 96/1247). The town is recorded in the Burghal Hidage, and the king's presence in Winchester is first mentioned in AD~896. Excavations have found evidence for the reconstruction of the defences, while the streets and canalised system of watercourses known as the Brooks were established, enabling occupation to extend once more onto the Itchen floodplain. The documentary and archaeological evidence for this land reclamation is examined. Evidence for the development of the street plan is also considered, and a degree of organic growth is identified in what has been thought to have been a planned grid. | |||||
