Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The first known discovery of a Roman silver vessel, a lanx or tray, in Britain took place in 1729 in Derbyshire. It was published by William Stukeley in 1736 but subsequently vanished. It apparently re-appeared in 1991 at Sotheby's but detailed examination showed that it was not in its original form and it is suggested that it was re-cast after its original discovery to improve the quality of the piece, which had been cut up into pieces when first found. The preservation of the detail of the original allows it to be dated to the second half of the fourth century AD. Its inscription shows it to have been used as a piece of church plate. | |||||||
