Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reviews the history of the site near Woodbridge, Suffolk, in the light of findings from the recently concluded decade of fieldwork. The site was cleared of oak forest in about 4,000~BC after which there was evidence of Beaker settlement and enclosures. Iron Age and Roman finds indicated intermittent agricultural use of the site until the Anglian burial ground was established. The sequence of eighteen barrows -- eleven of which have been excavated -- is thought to have begun with Mound 5, and closes with the two ship burials (Mound 2 and Mound 3). The contents of the graves are summarised. A final section gives an account of the recent destruction -- denudation by ploughing, antiquarian intrusions, and the construction of defences in WWII -- and the three campaigns of controlled excavation carried out since 1938. | ||||||||||||||||
