Abstract:
Work on the Winscombe Project in North Somerset continued in 2012 with documentary research into the medieval field system, map regression analysis, test-pitting and vernacular building surveys. It has been found that there was a greater survival of early (16th to 17th century) buildings in the outlying hamlets of Barton and Sandford than in the village of Winscombe itself, which became very gentrified later on with the wholesale removal and rebuilding of early houses in the 19th century. In Sidcot, test-pitting revealed a Neolithic polished stone axe associated with fragments of late medieval jugs. LD
