Abstract:
Details and combines the results of two separate projects: excavations in advance of pipeline construction and an assessment of the route of a proposed road scheme. both these developments threatened to impinge upon an area of earthworks at the village of Knook in the Wylye valley. The investigations gave some indication of the extent of the twelfth- to thirteenth-century occupation of the settlement. Both the archaeological and historical evidence suggest that the medieval settlement was bi-focal as a result of its lordship being split into two manors. Although occupation appears to have peaked in the thirteenth century, periods of contraction and expansion may have alternated until the settlement's most recent shrinkage in the early years of this century. Finds of flint, ceramic building materials, and animal bone are tabulated and there is a report on `The pottery' (81--5) by Lorraine Mepham.
