Abstract:

Reports on assemblages from rescue excavations carried out in advance of road construction on the defences and sites to the south and east of the walled area (including some from a building with a ritual function). The difficult post-excavation history is outlined, then reports on the sites present evidence of various phases of pottery production: first-century AD -- `Areas 4 and 5: Excavations by the Peterborough Museum Archaeological Field Section at Water Newton', by F Dakin & J R Perrin (38--45); later second/early third-century Lower Nene Valley (LNV) wares -- `Area 3: the pottery' by J P Gillam (19--37); early fourth-century LNV wares -- `Area 1: the area east of the Billing Brook' by G Webster (10--18); and pottery groups of the mid-second to later-fourth centuries -- `Site 2 (Billing Brook)' by J R Perrin (53--6), `Site 3 (Chesterton)' by E Greenfield & J R Perrin (with K F Hartley & L Rollo) (61--135).
