Investigates the strange subject matter, hyperbolic style and textual difficulties of these enigmatic OE dialogues. Challenges Menner's interpretation of the origin and chronology of the texts, attributing them instead to Alfred's Wessex, arguing that their reference to the Paternoster as a canticle places them in the context of the ecclesiastical reforms of the late-ninth century. The appendix (166-8) presents 'The micel boc of Solomon and Saturn 1-12'. |
