Small-scale excavation and survey work was undertaken at the Twll y mwyn (Cwm Darren) lead/copper mine near Pen-bont Rhydybeddau, and Erglodd lead mine near Talybont, in 2005 as part of a programme of investigation of early mining sites in mid-Wales. The evidence from Twll y mwyn suggests a phase of working, probably for copper, during the Early Bronze Age between 1900--1700 BC. Radiocarbon dating evidence for mining at Erglodd c. 2210 BC requires further investigation, but could potentially indicate early metal prospecting, or alternatively the recovery of mineral pigments. Clear evidence for later, but probably still ancient, disturbance and reworking of the site may be associated with the procurement of lead ores during the first century AD. | |||||||||
