Abstract:
Description of a watercolour painted by George Victor Du Noyer in 1839, showing a pair of undecorated latchets connected by a chain of ten metal coils. Hypotheses are offered as to the provenance and subsequent fate of the latchets, and the author discusses the corpus of twenty-four known latchets, dating from the late-fourth to seventh centuries AD, all but one of which were found in Ireland.
