A small-scale excavation was undertaken at Malachy's Wall, Bangor Abbey, Co Down, in 2005 in order to investigate the foundations of the wall, as concerns had arisen over its stability. The excavation showed that the wall had been set onto a compact loam surface which had been truncated by modern construction work, and that large stones had been removed from its base. Any archaeologically significant deposits post-dating the erection of the wall were similarly truncated by this modern activity, which has probably had a significant impact on the potential for archaeological preservation throughout the Abbey site. Residually deposited bone was found throughout the modern deposits, suggesting that the area surrounding the wall may formerly have been used for burials. | ||||
