[approx D 992982]. Occupation layers stratified in a diatomite deposit on the banks of the River Bann span the Atlantic period and part of the sub-Boreal. Bann flakes occurred early in the Atlantic levels, and layers VII and VIII contained Bann flakes and pollen suggestive of human clearance of forests. Higher in the section, a thick occupation layer (V) containing ground stone artefacts and more Bann flakes had a 14C date within 4th millennium BC and a landnam type of pollen assemblage. The site appears to have supported a highly specialised, perhaps summer activity, and has close parallels with Ringneill and Dalkey Island. | |||||
