Documentary references to the existence of medieval and later wood pastures are complemented by various categories of evidence which make it possible to identify zones where wood pasture survived longest. This evidence includes existing wood pastures, toponyms, field boundary patterns and trackways. An appendix examines the possibility of ageing elm pollards by girth measurement. | ||||
