Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
presents an overview of the archaeology of the siege in the early-modern period (c.1500--1775) using examples from northwest Europe and Colonial America. The author argues that the potential of studying closely-dated archaeological features and deposits associated with sieges offers unique opportunities to examine human behaviour, and to compare and contrast historical and archaeological sources. Aspects examined include siege tactics, fortifications, weaponry, burials and the everyday life of garrisons. The physical impact of sieges on towns and the problems facing urban archaeologists in tackling extensive and poorly-preserved siege lines are also discussed | |
