Abstract:
using case studies as a basis, the paper discusses the nature of airfields, including their design, installations and architecture, as historical and archaeological resources; demonstrates how the history of an airfield can be understood using the physical remains; and outlines English Heritage's response to the problem of conservation. The second half of the paper discusses the background to aircraft crash sites, their character, potential and the significance of the remains. The paper concludes by discussing how English Heritage hopes to foster a more informed approach to their future management
