The basic geophysical principle of ground probing radar is described, together with the data collection and processing system. Interpretation of the results is time-consuming and demands some experience of the technique; however it is now possible for archaeologists to collaborate in the interpretation of the data after transferring the information to a PC. Gloucester has been used as a `test-bed' for the technique since January 1990, including use on the site of a Norman castle. Whilst the technique must be still considered experimental and is not suitable for all sites, it is now in a position to make a major contribution to urban assessments. MH | |||
