Abstract:
Three papers examine current problems. Longworth (77-8) in 'Neolithic pottery: time to take another look' expresses alarm at the growing number of workers who have difficulty in identifying Neo pottery, partly through inadequate publication and partly through site-ridden myopia. Three topics need urgent attention: Decorated Bowls, the many facies of Peterborough Ware, and the Rusticated component of Peterborough-Grooved-Beaker coarse wares. Taphonomic effects also need care. Zienkiewicz & Hamilton (79-81) question Longworth's perception of declining standards, but argue the need for a specialist study group to bring Neo pottery researchers together. Numerous deficiencies bedevil the scene and all the old classifications need reassessment. Thomas (81-3) in 'A long, cold look: reply to Ian Longworth' applauds the call for re-evaluation, but says we need to think more about what we want pottery to tell us - about its uses, about why decoration develops in localized ways which then die out, and many such questions. Our context must be Neo social life, our new view come from a different direction.
