Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The absence of established criteria for the identification of grog/chamotte used in pottery and other ceramic products has made it difficult to distinguish between grog and argillaceous rock fragments (ARFs). An experimental study was conducted on the behaviour and properties of argillaceous rock fragments in identical contexts as well as in fired clays and pottery. It is clear from this and other recent studies that efforts to reduce materials that are non-uniform by definition (ie clays) to any system of predictable and discrete observable features as a basis for characterisation and classification should proceed with great care. However, there are three features that were found to be most exclusively associated with grog as opposed to ARFs: aligned to internal microstructure in grog, parallel to the surface of the parent vessel; internal fractures parallel to the greatest length of grog fragments; and even distribution of grog through the host fabric. | ||||||
