Abstract:
An air raid shelter breached during groundworks for development was surveyed and recorded by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2010. The shelter is thought to have been constructed towards the end of the First World War, and to have seen fairly extensive use during the Second World War. This article discusses the construction of the chalk-cut tunnels, notes the surviving traces of fittings and examines in more detail the many graffiti present, which date from late 1943 to late 1946.
