Abstract:
Article written in response to an article in Newsletter No. 57, in which a theory is put forward that the site of Bayford Castle at Sittingbourne originated as an overnight encampment for the Roman army. The present author considers the positions of Roman roads in the area, and the evidence for the existence of forts or marching camps at some of the sites mentioned in the previous article, and discusses the form of the earthworks at Bayford Court. He concludes that more evidence would be required in order to accept the identification of the court as a Roman military encampment, and that there is presently no reason to believe that either Bayford Court or Bayford Castle is anything other than a medieval moated manor house site.
