Abstract:
This paper sets out some of the problems encountered in evaluation and excavation of lithic scatters within a large riverside landscape in the middle Thames Valley, from which approximately 50,000 struck flints have been recovered to date. The methodologies evolved to deal with these are described, and comments are made upon the lessons that have been learnt. The flint scatters identified ranged in date between the Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic and the Middle/Late Bronze Age; a series of occupation horizons within a build-up of alluvium represented intermittent use of the floodplain over a long period of time.
