Abstract:		 The survey of the hillfort and earthwork castle has demonstrated the stratigraphic relationship of the two monuments, revealed evidence for radical reworking of the hillfort defences and shed new light on the nature of the castle. Miscellaneous earthworks include a beacon platform on the summit of the castle, together with the remains of medieval and later field boundaries and tracks outside the hillfort. The earthwork evidence has been complemented by a review of documentary and cartographic material. The castle presumably dates from the late-eleventh or early-twelfth century; from the mid-eighteenth century at least the hillfort and surrounding landscape have been subject to a varied pattern of land use.
