Abstract:
A summary of findings from rescue excavations at a Roman fort and settlement which were exposed by riverine erosion that destroyed much of the evidence. A timber fort and ditch system predate the stone fort, which inscriptions suggest was in existence by AD 161--9. Excavations of the substantial extramural settlement have shown it to have had an unusual relationship with the fort, being a rare example of a veteran settlement. Anaerobic conditions have resulted in excellent preservation of structural material and evidence of leatherworking. AR
