Abstract:
This paper presents new evidence for the formation of the cave and its deposits, including soil micromorphology and mammal faunas, and for their dating; and it re-assesses earlier excavations in the light of further investigations since 1952. Traces of Middle Palaeolithic hunters in the Early Devensian are succeeded by further evidence for Upper Palaeolithic Lincombian and Aurignacian hunters in a mid-Devensian interstadial. Two successive Later Upper Palaeolithic Creswellian phases ascribed to the Shouldered point and Backed point complexes are attributed to the late Devensian Windermere Interstadial and there were also Later Meso and Beaker occupations. Various appendices deal with `The Spelaeological Society archive' (239--40), `Survey of King Arthur's cave' (240), `Human bone from unit 2C (lost)' (240), `Descriptions of artefacts illustrated' (241--5), `Faunal remains in other museums' (246--7), `Artefacts in other museums' (247--8), and finally a `Bibliography of items not cited in text' (248--9).
