Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Contemporary documents and archaeology complement this examination of illuminated manuscripts to provide a history of the development of treadwheels and other mechanical hoisting devices, including their construction and operation. Manuscript illuminations demonstrate the degree to which changes in building construction techniques were noted and incorporated into the artists' pictorial vocabulary, as well as providing information on the origins and diffusion of these devices throughout Europe. Other inferences can be made from the depictions: new machinery appearing with old may indicate inefficient running of a construction site, for example, or they may simply have been adopted as new motifs in the artist's repertoire. An appendix lists extant medieval treadmills and windlasses in Belgium, England, France, Germany and Sweden. | ||||
