Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The importance of fish as a source of protein in the medieval diet is clear from the remains of sizeable earthworks constructed for breeding and rearing fish. Some are known from documentary evidence to have been in existence by 12th century and much royal expenditure is recorded during, for instance, Henry II's reign. Illuminated MSS show the catching of fish by trap, line and net, and the serving of fish at banquets. Transport of the catch was live in barrels, or sealed in bread, or salted. The fishponds have been little excavated except for the Washford group at Redditch, Warwickshire. Construction and form of fishponds are briefly indicated, and a dozen Northamptonshire examples known on the ground or from documents are described . | |||||
