[N996735] Two silver pennies which must have been lost c AD 950 were found corroded together in a structurally-intact portion of the souterrain, sealed by a layer dating to its final use. One coin is of Aethelstan (924-39, Winchester mint) and the other of Eadred (946-55, ?Chester mint). The conclusion is that the remodelling of the Knowth tomb as a fortified mound happened more than 200 years before the Anglo-Norman conquest of Meath. There is considerable coin evidence for Viking activity in the area. | |||
