Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The paper challenges the assumption that textile production at the Glastonbury Lake Village was an industry rather than a domestic activity. Glastonbury was built on a man-made platform in a flooded swamp and preservation of artefacts was good due to the development of peat after the site was abandoned. This has enabled craft tools used in the production of textiles to be studied. Discussion focuses on the function of the various implements of wood, antler, bone and clay, proposed by the excavators as tools used in a textile industry. The distribution of these tools across the site and over all four phases is considered, leading to the interpretation of textile production as a domestic activity. | |||||||
