Abstract:
The purpose of this review is to provide an academic framework for decisions about priorities for work funded by English Heritage on animal bones from archaeological excavations. Starting with a brief review of the kinds of information provided by the study of animal bones, and a discussion of assemblage quality and potential, the review examines objectives and priorities in the context of the archaeological priorities set out in Exploring Our Past (English Heritage, 1991) and the recommendations set out in the CBA's Research Priorities in Archaeological Science (Bailey & Grigson, 1987). The review concludes that future work should be more carefully targeted to answer specific questions, and should concentrate more on assemblages of high quality -- well-dated, well-preserved, well-recovered and of adequate size; it draws attention also to the need for more synthesis, for methodological research, and for better standards of sampling and recovery.
