Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The Hoo Peninsula is on the north Kent coast, bounded by the rivers Thames and Medway. Proposed changes, combined with the threat from rising sea levels, have highlighted the need to increase knowledge and promote awareness of how the peninsula's historical development has contributed to its character. English Heritage has therefore undertaken an investigation exploring its changing landscape from prehistory to the modern period. This article focuses on the impact that 19th- and 20th-century industries have had on Hoo, particularly the cement industry, oil refineries, and the manufacture of chemical explosives. One enduring industrial legacy has been the housing constructed for the increased working population. Au/LD | ||
