Abstract:
A typology for iron weapon heads is being developed using clustering techniques (modified CLUSTAN package) with the attributes defined by Barker for weapons. The study began with a set of simulated data containing fifty 'items' of various types, complete and fragmentary. The majority of the clustering techniques were successful in bringing the various 'weapons' together into classes; work now proceeds in applying the method to real Saxon, perhaps also Roman, weapons. The Barker method of description was found robust and useful.
