Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The vase, found in unrecorded circumstances in a Roman well at Reculver, may be dated to the end of 2nd or beginning of 3rd century AD. While it may conveniently be classified as black incised samian of Déchelette Form 72, its exact place of manufacture cannot be stated with any certainty. It is unique in the high quality of the ware and decoration, and the E Gaulish parallels for the form set it apart from Central Gaulish ware of the late Antonine and early 3rd century period. It had been pierced with three holes, possibly as a form of "ritual breakage" before deposit in the well. Au(amp) |
