Abstract:
Describes seven stages in the outward extension of the waterfront: earthen banks of the 10th and 11th centuries, a late 11th century stone wall, a series of wooden revetments of the 13th century and an early 14th century stone quay. Finds illustrated include a mid-11th century carved wooden figurine (front cover), a bucket stave and an object of unknown use both finely ornamented in Ringerike style, a ship's timber with incised gaming board, and a 13th century ampulla from Canterbury bearing representations of St Thomas-à -Becket. The discovery of considerable amounts of Irish, English and Continental pottery is reported, and an 11th century house foundation is also featured. P H
