Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The last ten years have witnessed a significant shift in emphasis in the works conducted by the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust (CPAT). In the early 1980s rescue excavations, often on a substantial scale, coupled with the maintenance of the Sites and Monuments Records for Powys and Clwyd and continuing aerial survey, represented the bulk of CPAT's work. However, a number of changes have occurred, not least the recent publication of government planning guidance introducing the principle that the developer should pay for the recording of an archaeological site before it is destroyed by a development. As a result CPAT is now involved in a wider range of projects than a decade ago, with funding coming from a larger number of sources. Excavations still form an important element in the programme -- for example, work has been undertaken at two Bronze Age cairns threatened by erosion. However, other recent projects have included: a rapid field survey of a tract of Abergwesyn Common; rapid surveys of all the historic settlements in the old county of Brecknockshire; investigation at Ystradgynlais Colliery; and geophysical survey at the site of a Roman bath house that was excavated in 1783 at Maesderwen, just south of Llanfrynach.
