Abstract:
Brecknockshire is one of the five old counties of Wales for which the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust assumed responsibility in the mid-1970s. Recently planning guidance issued to local authorities by the government has had a profound effect on how the Trust functions, with the key change being in the implementation of work programmes in advance of development. This short article outlines some of the projects the Trust has been involved with over the last year, including small-scale evaluations, upland survey in the Elan Valley region and on Abergwesyn Common, survey of the remains of the major metal mines in Powys, and investigations in Ystradgynlais in advance of development of the Brynhenllys opencast coal mine. A recently discovered waterlogged site in Talybont Forest is also mentioned. Here, tree-ring dating of timber from what may be a wooden platform built across a marsh or open water places the structure in the Neolithic period. Salvage recording and rescue excavations are to be undertaken. LD
